Helping U.S. Lobster Exporters Compete in an Unfair Trade Environment

by Food Export | Dec 14, 2017
Lobster Trap, Inc. was founded in 1969 as a neighborhood fish market on the Back River in Bourne, Massachusetts. Over time, the company has evolved to include a restaurant, catering, and a distribution company, which services restaurants and markets worldwide. Lobster Trap actively uses the services and activities offered by Food Export-Northeast to promote their lobster to foreign buyers.

Lobster Trap exhibits in the Food Export-Northeast pavilion at Seafood Expo Global. This event, which takes place each spring in Brussels, Belgium, is the largest trade event for the seafood industry and it’s key to reaching European buyers. In 2017, the company achieved actual sales of $3 million. Additional sales of $7 million are projected.

European sales represent 17% of the company’s total annual sales. However, keeping those European customers will be challenging because Canada’s new free trade agreement with Europe now makes Canada’s lobster significantly less expensive for European buyers, which gives Canada a competitive boost over U.S. lobster suppliers. Staying visible to buyers and reminding them that Lobster Trap is an experienced and reliable supplier of quality live lobster will be vital to maintaining export sales. Lobster Trap has already registered to participate in the 2018 Seafood Expo Global.

Food Export USA-Northeast is a private, non-profit association of Northeastern state agricultural promotion agencies that use federal, state, and industry resources to promote the export of Northeastern food, fishery and agricultural products. Food Export-Northeast administers many services through Market Access Program (MAP) funding from the USDA, Foreign Agricultural Service.
